With the Sudanese crisis entering its third week, Khartoum woke up again to the sounds of gunfire, explosions, and the roar of warplanes between the army and Rapid Support forces, despite the new truce agreed upon by the two parties. According to “Agence France Presse”, eyewitnesses spoke of hearing the sounds of warplanes, explosions and gunfire in different areas of the Sudanese capital, amid fears of the collapse of the “fragile” truce.
The agency quoted experts as saying: The cease-fire agreements aim to ensure the security of the evacuation routes for foreign nationals, and allow the continuation of some diplomatic efforts led by external parties in light of the generals’ refusal to communicate directly between them.
In their opinion, the efforts for a solution collide with the power struggle between Al-Burhan and Hamidti, which prompted tens of thousands to flee the country, according to Reuters, and raised fears that Sudan would be disintegrated and destabilize an already troubled region, prompting foreign governments to expedite the evacuation of their nationals, amid Warnings of the situation turning into a human tragedy.
The bloody confrontations have so far resulted in the death of about 528 dead and 4,599 wounded, according to statistics announced by the Sudanese Ministry of Health yesterday (Saturday), but other estimates say that the number of victims is greater than that, as the clashes affect 12 of the 18 Sudanese states.
According to United Nations estimates, 75,000 people moved to other parts of Sudan, at least 20,000 crossed to Chad, 6,000 to the Central African Republic, and others to Ethiopia and South Sudan.
Many Western and Arab countries evacuated their nationals in parallel with diplomatic efforts in pursuit of a solution, while the Arab League is holding today (Monday) a meeting at the level of ambassadors, at the request of Egypt, to discuss developments in the situation in Sudan. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation announced that an emergency meeting of its executive committee would be held the day after tomorrow (Wednesday) in Jeddah at the request of Saudi Arabia.
