The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, warned that Sudan is living today at a crossroads, stressing that the current conflict should not be allowed to escalate or turn, with or without interventions, into a first round of war that divides Sudan into warring regions. Aboul Gheit affirmed in his speech before the Arab ministerial meeting today (Sunday) that this matter carries great risks, expressing his confidence that the Arab countries will spare no effort to support him in facing his difficult challenges to cross towards a better future.
The Secretary-General announced his support for the Saudi-American initiative to launch indirect negotiations between representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Jeddah to reach a cease-fire agreement, calling for the need to adhere to this opportunity, give priority to the interest of the homeland over everything else, and seriously engage in talks to restore stability to Sudan. It preserves national institutions and safeguards its sovereignty.
He said: We meet today in light of an unprecedented situation in the modern history of Sudan, since the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, has become, since last April 15, an arena for bloody battles between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which resulted in hundreds of martyrs and thousands of wounded, and the influx of tens of thousands of displaced persons and the same number of refugees. to neighboring countries.
Aboul Gheit added: 23 days of bloody battles in the capital, Khartoum, and 4 years before that, since April 2019, of political rivalry, prevented reaching appropriate agreed-upon transitional mechanisms that allow achieving the aspirations of the Sudanese people towards peace, development, and prosperity. He pointed to the participation of the Arab League in meetings with the African Union and the United Nations to discuss the Sudanese crisis on April 20 and May 2, which are organizations to which Sudan belongs, and are also concerned with contributing to addressing its situation.
