US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken confirmed today (Tuesday) that Washington is working with Saudi Arabia during the talks hosted by the city of Jeddah to extend the ceasefire and reach an agreement to provide humanitarian aid in Sudan.
Blinken said: The United States will not abandon the goal of returning Sudan to the path of civil democratic rule.
A UN spokesman had said that UN aid chief Martin Griffiths suggested that the warring parties in Sudan support a declaration of commitments to ensure the safe passage of humanitarian relief materials.
The deputy spokesman for the international organization, Farhan Haq, said: The fact that this declaration was subject to consultations in the Jeddah talks encouraged Griffiths to launch this proposal, expressing his hope that the declaration be ratified as soon as possible so that the scope of relief operations can be expanded quickly and safely in order to meet the needs of millions of people in Sudan.
The United Nations has urged both sides to the conflict in Sudan to cease fire to allow much-needed humanitarian assistance.
