The Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, stated that the agenda of the thirty-second Arab summit, which will be held the day after tomorrow (Friday), under the presidency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, will discuss a number of important Arab issues, foremost of which are the Palestinian issue, the Sudanese crisis and developments in Syria.
He said in a statement to reporters, today (Wednesday): The crisis in Sudan and its continuation affects the stability of an important member state of the Arab system, and its influence extends outside Sudan, praising the Saudi-American initiative that reached a humanitarian truce, and expressing his hope for a permanent cease-fire.
He pointed out that an Arab contact group was formed, according to the League’s recent decision, to follow up on the situation in Sudan, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the Secretary-General. The committee will meet at the level of foreign ministers on the sidelines of the preparatory meetings for the summit.
He stressed that Syria has started a new phase by participating in the meetings of the Arab League, pointing out that the global interest in the Syrian issue has declined, but Syria is an important Arab country and what is happening in it affects its Arab surroundings, especially issues such as refugees and drug smuggling, hence the Arab decision to return its participation in the Arab League meetings.
He expressed his hope that the mechanism and the new committee established by the Arab League regarding Syria would open a new chapter in the Arab dealings with the Syrian situation and help the Syrians to get out of their crisis.
Egyptian sources revealed that the Arab foreign ministers will discuss the agenda of the summit and the draft resolutions that will be submitted to the Arab leaders. She explained that at the top of the agenda are the developments of the Palestinian cause, and the situation in Sudan, Libya, Lebanon and Somalia.
The Arab summit begins with a closed consultative session for an hour and a half for the leaders, during which the presidency of the summit is handed over from Algeria to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, followed by a first public working session, during which a speech is given by the summit president and then a speech by the Secretary-General of the Arab League, after which the Arab leaders speak according to the priority of the request.
And the sources stated that the draft agenda of the summit includes developments related to the crises that a number of Arab countries are going through, on top of which is the raging Sudanese crisis, and the situation in Yemen and Somalia. Since Michel Aoun left office at the end of last October.
The agenda also includes strengthening coordination and cooperation between Arab countries to combat terrorism, exchanging information between security services on extremist groups, maintaining Arab national security, and the need to strengthen Arab cooperation and coordination to face serious economic and social challenges, especially after the Corona crisis and then the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, and focus On the file of food security, activating the free trade exchange area between the Arab countries, as well as the energy crisis and climate change.
