The Arab Ministerial Contact Group concerned with Sudan, in its first meeting today (Wednesday), warned against interference in Sudanese affairs, declaring its support for the Declaration of Principles that was recently concluded in Jeddah.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the contact group, which includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, stressed during the meeting held in Jeddah the importance of reaching an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in Sudan, expressing its support for the Declaration of Principles, which was concluded by representatives of the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. Finally, in Jeddah regarding protecting civilians, facilitating humanitarian work, and meeting urgent humanitarian needs, according to the statement.
The group praised the efforts of a number of Arab countries to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people, stressing the continuation of their efforts and endeavors with all Sudanese parties and their coordination with regional and international groups and partners to reach solutions to the crisis.
The committee formed by the Ministerial Council’s decision on May 7 held its first meeting on the sidelines of the preparatory work for the Arab summit in Jeddah, which is scheduled for May 19.
Jamal Rushdi, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, said that the committee includes the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, in addition to the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, explaining that the committee is concerned with conducting the necessary contacts with the aim of reaching a complete and sustainable ceasefire and addressing the causes of the crisis in a way that meets the aspirations of the people. The spokesman added that the members of the committee listened to a presentation by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on the developments of the talks sponsored by his country in Jeddah with the aim of achieving and stabilizing the armistice between the two warring parties, and in order to give civilians, especially in Khartoum, the opportunity to breathe and obtain the necessary aid.
The spokesman conveyed the Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, stressing the importance of the parties’ commitment to the armistice as a prelude to achieving a comprehensive ceasefire, and in a way that allows a return to the policy square to address the crisis in Sudan in all its aspects.
